This painting was done when returning from my trip to The Gambia and Senegal. I worked alongside the Brufut Education Project. Money from the sales of prints of this painting has paid for Abdul Gibbas’ education. He is the eldest of the Gibba family and brother to the boy in the painting. I stayed with the Gibba family. They had eight children and struggled to keep their bellies full. They couldn’t afford to pay for treatment for their youngest daughter, whose horrific skin affliction on the soles of her feet and palms of her hands greatly hindered her ability to walk and crawl.
