She’s Mine

“ She’s Mine”. A painting representing the social issues women face when they give birth to a child out of wedlock, more often than not having been the victim of sexual abuse. It is the norm to have to “get rid” of your baby, so as not be a social outcaste for the rest of your days and live in poverty or have to rely on “safe houses” such as the one this girls found refuge in. The same safe house I ran portrait workshops while in Jaffna, working alongside Jaffna Social Action Centre.

This young girl was a victim of sexual abuse. She is keeping her baby.
